Quailhurst stallion Caletino, after just two months in training with Oregon-based US showjumping team rider Rich Fellers, traveled to Canada in May to make his debut in the jumper divisions. And what a debut it was! Deborah and the Quailhurst team can’t say they were surprised, but most certainly proud, of the success and connection the pair had on this first international outing.
Caletino took an obvious liking to the jumper ring at the Canadian Premier (May 20-24, 2009), consistently finishing in the top three in the 1.0M and 1.15M jumpers. Out of 51 entries, he finished fourth in his first ever 1.10M class – at his first ever show as a jumper after a long and successful career in dressage.
Continuing his clean streak into the following week, Caletino again performed flawlessly at the British Columbia Open (May 26-31, 2009). Rich piloted the stallion to top ribbons in the 1.15M division and a fourth place finish, out of 35 entries, in the $2500 Stone Ridge Jumper Classic. Caletino finished his debut at Thunderbird with only 1 rail in 10 rounds.
It was quite a pleasure for Deborah to receive the nightly calls from Rich with updates on Caletino’s classes in Canada, especially hearing in his voice the excitement (and perhaps a bit of incredulity?) at the stallion’s natural jumping ability and ridability. Next up for Caletino and Rich… Spruce Meadows.
